Got $300k - $400k, looking for something unique in phoenix

Postby misterpanda on Fri Feb 25, 2005 11:39 pm

Any suggestions? Too busy for DIY, don't want another boring stucco home. Lots of stuff being built (especially high end condos) but nothing to buy today

Looked at Bon Vie - but too small, too fishbowl.

Single straight guy 30's, don't want to live somewhere boring or stuffy

Everyone gets a suggestion - thanks!!!

Welcome, misterpanda!

If I were in your position I'd buy a modest plot of empty land in Cactus Heights for $50,000 and either set down a prefab house on it, or spend the rest on one of the great architects or design/build resources here in the valley to do all the design work for you.

Or spend half of what you've got and try those swank two-story latemidcenturycondos on Central and.... Northern? Matthew will know the address. I want to say 1880 or 8800 but I can't find it on the map.

Also, for that amount you could try your luck at Paradise Gardens for a house that is decent and not needing much DIY, yet still hot.

I do not know the address of the buidling that Pix mentions, but it is on the northwest corner of Northern and Central. Actually it has four addresses, one for each building in the development. It does not look like much on the outside, but the one we went in had so much potential. It was a second story condo that was two-stories tall and had a huge loft type open space with a steel I-beam and concrete staircase. The place is built like a bunker with masonry walls and concrete floors on the second and third floors. You could have totally ripped the carpet out and had an austere concrete and steel loft feel. The grounds and pool were very manicured and luscious. It is a cool building at a great location.

Cactus Heights is that curious little sliver of an area bounded by 7th street on one side, Cave Creek Road on the other, The Pointe Resort to the north and Sunnyslope to the south.

Just make a driveby up and down the streets and see what signs are up on empty lots. And this is also the part where an agent comes in really handy. They'll be able to search the listings for lots without signs.

Or you can get crafty like some folks and buy a 1-bedroom house on a lot for under $100,000, and then if it is not architecturally significant, mow it down and have someone design better for the site. Look for the work under construction from 180 degrees and you'll get the picture.

I'll forewarn you about Cactus Heights. It is.... funky. But in a good way. In a way where people are free to express themselves, at the very least. Culture springs forth in the most unexpected places.
