Your name, of course
What you do to keep busy
Why you love modernism
What kind of neighborhood/house you live in
Your thoughts about Phoenix, local design, and why you live here
How you found out about ModernPhoenix.net

Well, I am the other half.

I love design solutions that reveal the true nature of materials and highlight how things are built. Decoration is bad. CMU and slump blocks are good. (Cast concrete and rammed earth are better, but so expensive!).

I currently live in a stick and stucco two story home built in 1998. The aesthetics suck, but suck much less than many other homes. The layout is great and the interior is surprisingly devoid of adornment. Still I long for something more honest...

I love the desert here, the mountains. I love Sunnyslope. I love Sunnyslope in an irrational way - I know it is not the best neighborhood in terms of schools, crime or property values but I want it so bad anyhow.

Thanks Ben for the positive feedback. We do hope that ModernPhoenix becomes as future-forward as it is respectfully looking back.

Do come back and write more when you can.

Greetings to Modern Phoenix

Postby mchaves on Thu Sep 02, 2004 11:47 am

I love this website. My name is Michele and I currently live in the DC area. I'm originally from Phoenix and moved away about 10 years ago. I grew up around 15th Ave and Northern. My husband and I are planning on moving back, hopefully in 2005, and my search for where we want to be in Phoenix led me to ModernPhoenix.

I've always loved all the quirky modern homes in town and have been so excited to see all the great remodels. I was just amazed when I recently visited to see that so many of the homes on this site stand one after the other on some streets. What fantastic neighborhoods!

I visit Phoenix several times a year and have really felt a big change in the air in the past 3 years or so. It seems to be a mecca for modern architecture and some much needed urban culture is sprouting up around town. I'm curious to know how some of the inhabitants feel about life in Phoenix, the culture and community. What does the future hold? How do you feel about the local government (I was always so frustrated by the local government that had big developers in its pocket while supporting the destruction of so much that once made Phoenix cool and completely unique.)

Thanks!
M

Hello

Postby mason on Thu Sep 02, 2004 12:41 pm

My wife and I live on 10th/Bethany, in the same neighborhood as a lot of you. We are in remodel mode, and its so nice to see what some of our neighbors have done.

Thank you for putting together this forum. It should be a great resource for modern enthusiasts.

We looked for a modern home/community in Phoenix for quite some time, and by pure luck happened to drive into the neighborhood we now reside in. Hopefully this site can be a good resource for others, so they don't have to go through the hassle.

Thanks again, for your efforts.

Welcome Mason, and Michele too!

Take lots of Before pictures so you can proudly post them here next to your Afters when its all done, Mason! Earlier this week I was sent a nice Before and After shot of a Haver kitchen that rocks. It will get posted in September's update.

I've already responded to Michele's queries in a flurry of rambling emails, but am curious to hear what the rest of you have to say. Maybe I will post a few excerpts here this weekend.

Hi, This is Shawn and Tiffany. We're currently selling our Tuscan Villa to move to a Haver home. I work in architecture and she'a a realtor. I have found this to be my new favorite forum! Hopefully we can get some additional homeowners to register. I've personally told over 10 people about the site. I really like what is going on the Haver communities! Many of the re-models have really been tastefully done and I commend all of you for maintaining the true modernism style. We've come very close to getting into the Windemere n-hood of indian and 45th. This is a great community as is Marlen Grove. It's just a matter of timing. Wish us luck and we could be your next neighbors!

Welcome! I'm laughing because maybe someday we'll have a whole new thread: "My name is ____ and I'm selling my Tuscan Villa!"

The name of the store is 2b mod and we are at 4158 N.Goldwater Blvd.We have been here for less than 4 months and although it is a work in progress we were mentioned in Desert Living magazine as a source for modern furnishings in town.It was great to be included. The store is mainly focused in modern classics reproductions but that is just the base.In the future we plan to add new designs as well as some vintage pieces. If interested give me a call at 480-941-8192.
