MCM BBQ

Postby matthew on Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:50 pm

Those of you that know me offline know that I love to bbq. I just came across this bbq which I have not seen before. It is cast aluminum and was invented in 1953... Anyone used one before?

Nice! Quite the retro look. Especially these days when BBQs practically come with built-in microwaves and wireless internet access

I'm partial to my little smokey

Now, is that cute or what?

matthew,
I'm still waiting for you to post images of the mod-kebob (tm). Now that is a sleek and modern bbq, 'its a machine for cooking on'.

That would be "mod kebab"... Sorry, there's only one way to spell it.
Matthew, show everyone what he's talking about!

I agree - pull out the digital and post a pic or two. Heck, I just proud to know someone who designs and builds such cool stuff. Of course, I'm even prouder when you're done barbequing and we can eat!

Now that's good eats....

I prefer the spelling kabob

Here's the grill. Not a good shot but I had it online already :)

Maybe I will fire the bad boy up this weekend and do some action shots. Justin - I'm halfway serious about putting one of these down the middle of the rolling picnic table. Me and Pix were looking at Speedrail fittings at Capitol Metal the other day and I was thinking about putting the table together with those. Whacha think mang?

That sounds really good. I love the way Speedrail looks and it's a snap to put together. I'll bet you could mount that bbq on the underside of the table - of course, you'd have to cut a hole first  , then make a removable top. It'd be a futuristic Korean bbq pit. Ooooo...
Maybe you could make the tabletop out of something like the tables in here: http://www.munimula.com/products.html

Yeah, that one is just a prototype to see how it worked for kabobs. The execution is a bit clunky, particularly in the legs. It really should be welded rather than bolted together too. And the perf steel grate should have a brake bend going the other way to keep it flat. It is amazing how much some hardwood charcoal can distort a sheet of steel.

I'm thinking the table concept would be nice with a stainless cover over the bbq when you are not using it. Also I am playing with some ideas that are more like a yakitori grill using convection like a chimney starter. I'm kinda liking the idea of having satay or shrimp on ice preskewered and then guests get to grill their own to order while playing bocce in the backyard. Something along those lines...

That took me two reads to get. Adapt is playing off of the quote Alison wrote on her chalkboard that "A house is a machine for living in" from LeCorbusier.

Damn right my kabob-eque is a machine!

and nice grill hector! I have not used one. The website says the short legs are so that you can sit down next to it and enjoy the process. I am all about that kind of thinking.

I just wonder what they are talking about when they say it is made from "aluminized steel" - wtf?

LOL Matthew, did you spray down our concrete pad to make the kabob look sexier?

Matthew -

Highly recommend the stainless lid - cats just love walking though the dust in morning and leaving their mark, which can make for rather stinky kabobs the next time around!

Love the speedrail idea for Kabob-eque v2.0 - let me know if you need help along the way.
