Looking for someone to do metal edging

Postby RiseAgainst on Wed Feb 01, 2012 12:17 pm

We were going to tackle this ourselves but we have too many other projects going on right now that we need to finish so we are looking for someone to complete an edging job. We have some breaks in materials in front of the house, a path with pavers we are going to break from existing lawn rocks, and edging bordering the drive.

We also have a break in elevation to our newly graded driveway so we are thinking we might need a much taller piece of metal edging with some thickness then just a normal break and might need some welding?

We are just looking for some referrals and have someone to take a look at the work who is experienced. We have done 80% of our remodel ourselves so we don't mind some DIY or working with someone who can help us complete this. Reply to this post or shoot me an email at cjboulier@gmail.com if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

Apparently this is harder than I thought to get nailed down...we did get a quote for 1/8 x 4 steel bars from Industrial Metal supply, it will be close to a grand for the metal then we need to figure out a stake solution (the quote was for cold rolled, hot rolled is cheaper but not sure if it would look worse).

They don't carry anything thinner then 1/8th, I like the looks of the 1/8th but it might not be necessary so what else is out there for solutions? Every landscape edging I see online or available at hardware/nurseries seems flimsy and is going to be difficult to hold a "true" straight line. What am I missing?

All previous posts no one is very specific about the edging specifics, what you can get at the steel yard is very different from what you can special order at Lowe's etc. I know lots of people have this done, I just am having a hard time finding resources to help figure out most cost effective product that will give use what we need (sizes, stake types, alloy types, etc). Thanks to anyone who wants to chime in.

I am also looking for metal edging and this has been a difficult task for me too. I don't quite understand why it is so hard to find because I see metal edging in yards all over the valley so I am a bit baffled. If you find a solution please let me know and I will do the same for you.

The last time I did one I bought 10’x 4’ sheets and had them cut into strips 10 ft x6”. You can have them cut any height you won’t. Sheets come in a lot more thicknesses than strap does and it’s cheaper. I just bought a sheet of 10 gage and I think it was 140.00. @ 6” you get 8 pieces, that’s 80 ft. I’m not sure if industrial metal has a 10 ft sheer but you can ask or buy 8 footers.

Where did you buy the metal sheets from? Home Depot? And did HD cut them for you or did you have to bring them somewhere else to be cut? Thanks

Yeah, that price seems good for the sheets.

So far I have gotten some rough quotes from Industrial Metal Supply for 4 inch 1/8th inch flat steel bars. The price seemed to come out to around $2.75 per foot for hot rolled (cold rolled was more then twice as much). They come in 20 ft lengths and can be cut to any size for a fee per cut.

The problem I have run into is I think I need wider then 1/8 th inch for certain sections and a lot more height then 4 inches in order to secure the edging where we need it. I'll be taking final measurements this weekend and getting a final quote on the pricing so I will see what it comes back as.

The sheet idea intrigues me if the strips/bars all come out the same and the cut fee for cutting strips the entire length of the sheet is not ridiculous.

It's going to be very difficult to install 1/8 by 4 steel and keep it straight in runs of any real length. We installed steel headers at the new City of Phoenix Mountain View Police Precinct. If I remember correctly, the headers are (much larger than you need) 1/2" thick by 12" tall. We trenched and buried the headers leaving around 2" above grade. To keep them straight, we pounded in concrete stakes and welded the headers to the concrete stakes. Drive by Maryland and 20th St to see them.

If you are looking to use the headers to retain any material or if you are concerned about them staying straight, I wouldn't go less than 3/16 thick. Buying 3/16 thick sheet goods and having a shop shear them to the height you want is probably your best bet. You could go 6" and leave more of the header buried making the stakes less important. For the stakes, you can use 9" or 10" nails from HD and weld them to the header in place.

Check Advanced Metal Sales, 21605 North 26th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ, (623) 434-8343 for steel pricing. I think you'll find them competitive. I bought our headers from Davis Salvage.
