Tuck Shop Expansion Hearing

Postby modeddie on Tue Sep 06, 2011 8:04 pm

The Tuck Shop hopes to expand to a (now vacant) house next door. It will be a breakfast/lunch/Tuck-Shop-waiting-area when it's busy. For the unlucky few who've never been, and to clarify why I post here rather than Marketplace---I have no business interest in the place, I just happen to be lucky enough to live around the corner---read the posts and view the photos at http://www.modernphoenix.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4342&p=22193&hilit=tuck+shop#p22193 and many other posts in these forums. Besides being an exquisitely tasteful example of modern reuse (of a frankly ugly original), and besides serving fabulous and creative food, it is located right in the middle of a residential neighborhood, mine, at the corner of 12th Street and Oak, epicenter of the Coronado Historic District. I bike or walk by the restaurant every night, and they are fabulous neighbors. The building sits beautifully and lightly in the neighborhood. I think owner DJ Fernandes is a Phoenix urban pioneer in the spirit of Jane Jacobs in opening a great restaurant in a residential neighborhood. If you agree that Tuck Shop is a great addition to Central Phoenix, then please write a letter of support to the City of Phoenix Planning Department, 200 West Washington, Phoenix AZ 85003, and, if you can, attend the hearing on Sept 15 at 900 AM at City Hall. I'll be there. I attach a flyer.

That restaurant has long been a favorite of mine. Thanks for posting this!

Happily the zoning for the new restaurant was approved---on the spot, a bit surprisingly---despite vocal and, I think, slightly deranged opposition. My neighborhood, and Phoenix, just became a better place to live.

I passionately love modernist architecture (no surprise since I am writing here). But there is another matter that is too often not a part of the modernist program, walkable urban neighborhoods (meaning you use a car if at all for occasional errands or trips outside the city). Tuck Shop and its new sister are fabulous additions to the urban fabric of Phoenix, thin as it is.

(Our neighbors all warmly welcome visitors to our eclectic neighborhood, by car or otherwise, but Northern Modernists should note that my favorite bus line #12 runs from Sunnyslope to the doorstep of Tuck Shop; and if you have a bike, it's all downhill from Sunnyslope.)
