can this 1950 house be modded?

how can i make this place more modern? hi everyone i am new to the site, i am remodeling this place and could really use some input. i need help on paint color, front door options and landscaping. also i am ready to redo my kitchen, i need some new cabinets, any suggestions besides ikea. my budget for the cabinets counters and appliances and demoing a wall is about 10,000. thank you all in advance for your suggestions. and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this great site.

The first thing you should do is consult a professional. I'd recommend looking into http://www.theranchmine.com/, they update fairly plain homes from the 50s and give them a modern, clean look.

I'm a complete rookie at this however my favorite quote comes from Picasso "Talent Borrows.. but Genius Steals."

That being said, I take ideas away from whereever I can find them. I don't suggest that you copy anything but take a concept that you like then make it your own.

Magazines such as Dwell ( but I'm going to spit up if I see yet another Eames lounge chair and Noguchi coffee table paired together), books, television shows etc..... heck, I love "The Incredibles" family home from the cartoon movie of the same name.

Great design is everywhere (so is God awful design) just keep your eyes open.

This is quick Photochop.
Even if you don't buy into the colors ( i think they're groovy):

1)These houses benefit greatly from new, larger fascia boards. It helps to accentuate roof as a design element. Most are about 4"- this is probably more like 6". A new drip edge makes it look more crisp and intentional also.

2) Crestview Door- a must have. This is my chopped up "Brentwood"

3. Architectural Numbers help to activate some of the empty space on the facade.

Alot of people want to do these block homes very modern and stark, but you can include some nostalgia or "cuteness"- it's your house after all.

Nice! We have a Sketchup wizard in our presence now! Yeehaw! I love your renderings and your construction ideas, particularly the trellis on the carport.

Ivarni - I'm curious how much time it took you to produce models like those in Sketchup. I haven't invested enough time in learning Sketchup very well but I think it just made it's way to my todo list.

Thanks matthew! I'm lucky enough to use sketchup at my job so I have a few years under my belt now. That model probably took about an hour to complete. Sketchup is fairly easy and intuitive. Once you learn all the shortcuts and familiar with the interface it doesn't take too long to knock some ideas around in 3D.

thank you all very much for your comments and ideas. and a special thank you to toy-deziner and lavrni for taking the time to do what you did ..lavrni that is truly amazing!! i never thought my house could look like that, i am sure i can use some of those ideas...(i probably couldnt afford to execute the entire design) toy i love your ideas too. especially the door .i had come across the crestview site a few weeks ago and thought that would be a good way to go. again thank you all i will keep you posted on the progress

I have mentioned it before but, its worth mentioning again. For some ideas on outside paint colors for a classic "Ranch" home, Dunn Edwards has a pretty good brochure that shows exterior color combinations. The brochure is just labeled "ranch" so, pop in the Dunn Edwards store on Camelback and they will put one in your hands. I like to look at paint colors in person to get as authentic an idea of the real paint color as possible.

Current color use right now and probably for next decade is a little crisper, clearer and more hue in paint color ideas than is shown in the "Ranch" brochure but, the brochure is a good jumping off place to try some color ideas. Pictures nice in brochure too!
