Any of you have your own websites?

All discussion not related to our themes of Modernism, Contemporary Architecture and Design, Real Estate and development of Phoenix belongs here. This is a good place to discuss non-modern properties, meeting up for drinks, shows and events and other non-modern topics that would interest our community.

Any of you have your own websites?

Postby ccarroll on Sun Apr 04, 2010 10:57 am

All right, I'll try my luck with a different question.

I'm toying with the idea of starting a website. I'm clueless, but I figure some of you may be knowledgeable about this kind of thing.

My idea would be for something fairly simple (and cheap!) that would involve a perhaps 3-6 sections for posting notices/ads and a small discussion forum, which of course means an avenue for posters to register. The first thing I'm wondering is how to choose a person to set it up. (No, I don't plan to do it myself!) Any idea what's the least I should expect to spend? Or where to best look for a designer? Or how to decide if a person is competent?

If you want really simple, but good looking, have a look at http://www.weebly.com. This is a really easy website builder. Also they will build a website for you for a fee but I don't know about that side of things. They have a free version and a paid version. Although they do not have a forum that you can add to your website, they do have their own blogs. You can use a blog as a basic kind of forum, to get you started and see if this is something you want to invest in. Just my two cents worth!

Even if you do not want to use Weebly for your actual website, I have found it useful for mocking up a website so that people know what I am talking about.

A simple free blog is http://www.blogger.com. It's pretty easy to set up and they host it.

I have not tried this but http://www.lefora.com/ was recommended to me as a free forum venue.

You can have a look at my yoga teacher training website. It's pretty basic but it doesn't have a forum. The best thing to do is to hire someone that has a fair amount of experience designing websites. Someone with experience will probably put together a nicer site and will have more coding knowledge and knowledge about things like how to add and maintain a forum.

I used http://www.wix.com to design http://www.yogasusie.com. I designed there and host with them. I thought it was pretty reasonably priced for a Flash website and it was very idiot-proof to set up. Which is exactly what I needed...I set it up myself and I know NOTHING about html, coding, or whatever other flashy words those website people throw around. Good luck!

I teach WIX to my non-graphic design students and they love it. With some fiddling you can get it to do just about anything. However since it is Flash-based you do not benefit from intense search engine optimization the way HTML does.

I've got a website over at http://awesometoyblog.com its powered by wordpress which continues to surprise me with everything it can do. I'm not sure about options for a forum; but I host through godaddy (yes, I'm lazy) and I know they have some default forum solutions.

Once I made the decision to have the site, I'd say it only took me a 2, 3 hours to get off and running.

I hadn't checked in for a while, and didn't see that some others weighed in.

But just to reiterate, the core questions were: how to find people to design a website, how to choose a person, how to tell if someone is competent, what's a reasonable price range...

Thanks!

Well this is exactly my area of expertise and so I'll step up.

Here's an old adage that stands true for 85% of design jobs done cold with no prior relationship:

You can have it done:
1] Fast
2] Good
3] Cheap

Pick two.

Experience has shown me that the GOOD part of the equation is essentially the non-negotiable quality. That means you have to lose Fast or Cheap.

how to find people to design a website
People or designers? There's a difference. If you want people, go to Criaigslist or some other overseas outsourcing website that connects people to people. For designers, at the price range you seem to be seeking contact the Career Services department of The Art Institute of Phoenix, Collins College and ASU.

Or visit design directories like:
http://www.creativehotlist.com/index.as ... mePort.asp
http://www.coroflot.com/public/people_home.asp
http://portfolios.gag.org
http://www.creativeshake.com
http://www.altpick.com

how to choose a person
Meet them in person. Screen them by their digital portfolios. If they can't show you a digital portfolio, run. Don't ever hire someone without meeting them. If you like their work, schedule coffee with them. Write their clients for quick references with three short questions of areas that are relevant to your job.

how to tell if someone is competent
Their portfolio will show you if they are competent, as will their face to face meeting. This will also confirm if there is any language barrier, which may be an issue in outsourcing overseas. Since you are looking for specific expertise in setting up a message-board type forum, don't hire anyone without experience in this area. On the flipside, don't hire someone who does just forums and only forums, as chances are they are not a designer but just a tech guy who sets up Content Management Systems. I'm presuming you don't just want a functional website, but one that is actually attractive, unique and converts viewers into consumers or fans of your brand. Ask them what their experience is in branding. Blank stare or doubletake, and move on. Here's another dealbreaking question that separates the (wo)men from the boys: "How do you plan to integrate SEO* strategies as you build my site?" If they stare at you blankly, ask SEO? or say they'll get back to you, move on to the next interview. Additionally a GOOD designer won't talk over your head with mumbo jumbo but take time to find out your needs and marketing interests before cramming their solutions down your throat FAST and CHEAP.

what's a reasonable price range
For a degreed designer with a decent portfolio, don't pay any less than $20 an hour. $25 would be respectful for a recent graduate with obviously demonstrated talent. For nondegreed or overseas, expect to pay less and possibly get less. For someone with substantial and measurable experience under their belt expect to pay anywhere from $45 to $100 per hour. Typically for the higher range you can expect some advanced degree of experienced branding, marketing, SEO, total package.
