Friendly people please respond

Friendly people please respond

Postby terminalbliss66 on Thu Apr 10, 2008 8:49 pm

Hi! Embarassingly long time lurker, new poster. My husband and I have lived in the 12th St./Maryland Ave area for over a year. We have a three year old daughter, and after some debate between us, we realized that 1.) None of our close friends have a child near our own child's age, and 2.) That we have not found any immediate neighbors that have children in her age group either. On top of that, we are also looking for some like minded folks to hang out with and what-not.

I thought this might be a place to start. We both work full time and are just looking to connect with open-minded people who enjoy/tolerate cocktails, music, homes, volkswagens ( I had to throw that in there!), etc. Is anyone interested? Or perhaps already have something going? We would love to get something started...

Hi neighbor! We're at 12th and Highland along the Rockin' 12th Street Corridor! Every 4th of July we throw a party for MoPhos with kids so we can play with fire, talk about VeeDubs and fixies, and geek out on delicious food + beer. Let us know if you are in town!

Also, we highly recommend Discovery Tree Learning Center preschool in Sunnyslope for meeting likeminded parents and supercool kids. :-) It is a sister school of Creative Bridges, which is closer to our home but harder to get into because of its longtime reputation in the area.

Hello and welcome!!!
We were in the exact same situation! My son is 6 now, but he went to Creative Bridges (Alison mentioned this in her post as the sister school to Discovery Tree) and we met some wonderful families and made some wonderful friendships during our time there, even after we left for kindergarten this past year. It became a great network for us. Since you're so close to the school (Creative Bridges) you would probably meet families that live close to you. Anyway, hope to meet you and some of the events!!!

Thank you, ladies, for your nice responses. I am truly bummed that we can't come play on the 4th of July, but we will be making our yearly trek to Erie, PA. to see family. I wish I would have known more about the daycare options in ths area before we enrolled our daughter last year. She's currently at Parkway (Maryland/16th St), but most of the families seem to be from all over the valley and it's also Christian based, which really isn't our 'thing'. She's doing really well though and seems happy, so I am afraid to move her :? Which brings me back to wanting to meet locals. Somehow I'll figure out a way to meet some of you. Maybe if the hubby and I can get ourselves together and have a soiree or something...

If she is doing really well, she might be okay with a move and get two or even three more years of delight at a new school. The Creative Bridges and Discovery Tree campuses are both housed at community churches but are non-denominational. They are open to parental visits for observation. Tell them the Kings sent you.

Some of the kids from those schools are going to attend Madison Traditional on 16th near you for kindergarten. It is exciting, taking this tight-knit group from preschool to kindergarten together because we can!

Discovery Tree and Creative Bridges are not non-denominational. Discovery Tree is located at a Lutheran church and Creative Bridges at a Presbyterian church. While this has nothing to do with the curriculum or mission of either school I felt it necessary to clarify for accuracy.

Thanks for the input everyone! If I can ever get myself together, I will try to pursue these options! Lol. By the way, I never mentioned in my first post how great of a site this is, and what a resource it has been for us. Yee-haw...

Well--Helloo there my fellow Mommies with VW's. My husband Mike and I have a 5-year old and an 18-month old (both boys). We have had MANY Volkswagens--the best were '56 Oval, '59 rag top, '66 Double-Cab & my favorite was a '60 15- window. Even though I do not live in Phoenix, I am planning on sending Wyatt to Madison Heights for Kindergarten in the Fall of 2008 and Grant (18-month old) goes to the Weekday School at Central & Missouri. I know it is a drive but, let me know if you would like to come to Laveen, see our baby chicks & Mule, have a beer on the patio and talk Modern Mommy stuff!

WOW. So sorry for the delay in response, Sophia. Work got out of hand. I am amazed at your dedication to have the kids in Madison schools, given the commute. I must assume you work somewhere near the area. So cool that you live where you can have livestock, the closest my husband will let me get to that is our great dane, which may count, seeing the amount of food she inhales. We just have the one veedub, a 66 Ghia, which, for lack of a better word, is hibernating for the summer. I would still love to have an open invitation party/gathering for anyone on this site who's interested. I need to get myself/family more involved with the community on the whole. I would love to take you up on a trip to Laveen sometime, though. Anyone else wanna play? (yes, that includes you too, Mr. Yanatell  )

If I hosted a MoPho Madison Moms, Munchkins and Magnificent Mudpit (and Mojito?!?!) playdate next friday, would all of you moms from the Madison area come? From about 4:30 until 6? Or does it need to be 5:30 to 7 for the workin' moms? I have fridays off so I'm open. My house is a disaster right now (kitchen and bath remodel) but the yard is perfect this time of year for the kids!. Nice climbable trees, ramps, bikes, swing, shade, mud play, etc. My boy is 5 and very social/chatty, even with new friends.

That's friday of Memorial Day weekend, the 25th. Hope some of you are in town!

Miss Pixel, that would be super! Count me and my daughter, Riley, in. What can I bring? Sadly, I am one of those 'slaves to the man', so I wouldn't be able to arrive until 5:30 ish. We can do the next one at my casa.

Thanks for the invite Alison, my grandmother passed away over the weekend (don't be sad, we weren't very close) and the rosary is on Friday at 4pm in Scottsdale. I would take you up on it any other time but, I can't this weekend. let me know when you will host again--Wyatt (5 year old) would love to ride a ramp with his bike, we have a mini dirt BMX track in our backyard and he rides it.
