Favorite bars/restaurants in central Phoenix?

Postby mchaves on Sat Mar 24, 2007 9:08 am

I'd like to know what everyone's favorite bars are in central Phoenix and if there are any new and notable places. I don't come into town too much and tend to rely on my old favorites -- but since I'm moving back I'm trying to get a feel for where, if anywhere, the peeps hang out.

My husband and I are really into a place called Delux Burger at 32nd St. and Camelback. It's got a swanky vibe and really fresh tasting food. My favorite is the basket of sweet potato fries served in a mini shopping cart. The environment attracts everyone from hip, artsy types to lawyer types. Plus, there's a great gelato place across the parking lot for dessert  .

Try the Roosevelt Tavern in Downtown Phoenix.

We like the Vig at 40th & Indian School. A new hip place that's more of a neighborhood hangout but worth a trip. You'll run into MoPho's there all the time as well as quite a few locals from the Windemere Haver 'hood. They have a Vig Azz Burger that rivals that of Delux which is still the best burger in my book. They also have the "Modern Building Salad" which is not too bad either. You gotta love the names on the menu.

Check it out!

I've been to Delux several times -- love it. Wish there were more places like that around town. Vig is a new one for me -- I'll check it out. I've heard Fez is good, but can you get to it with all the construction on Central?

And coffee -- what is the preference for coffee? I always felt Lux was fantastic. Stopped into Drip today, unfortunately just before closing. I did get some tea, but didn't have time to get a feel for the place when it is really buzzing. I'll have to check back during the week. What about the place on 7th Ave. -- Copper something?

mchaves-
You can get to it.
Easily.
The traffic isn't bad at all in the evenings especially on the weekends.
FEZ has some damn good food too.
This is starting to look a little like the famous late night dining thread!

this is one of my favorite topics...

my favorite cenpho bars:
Grand Avenue Tavern
Bikini Lounge
The Roosevelt
Camus
Chez Nous
Merc Bar

my favorite cenpho restaurants:
Barrio Cafe
Fate
Matt's Big Breakfast
Coronado Cafe
Richardson's
Cibo
Chelsea's Kitchen
Fez

And I agree...Central Ave kinda sucks at the moment, but it's still not that hard to get to Fez.

Well, your question was about bars so I'll second Richardsons/Dick's Hideaway. We don't go out to bars much these days but when we have a late night out (like tonight!), it's there.

Thanks for all these suggestions and I'll check out the old thread. Even though I don't live here I feel like I've generally stayed on top of new spots until real recently. I've driven around town on my past few visits and realized there are so many new places that I don't know about. This is really helpful! thanks.

I just spent the last hour reading the late night restaurant thread from last year. Mr. Natural's description of Delux had me laughing out loud. I LOVED the mentions of old Phx restaurants -- I looked through the old postings and don't see that anyone ever started a thread about them so I'm going to do that now.

Now that Pita Jungle has a new location in Arcadia, I sense a new MoPho locus forming. No need to go all the way out to Tempe anymore!

If you like Fez, check out Ticoz on 7th street north of Camelback. Same owners, great food, great drinks.
