Shade Sails

Postby ichabod on Mon May 24, 2010 2:59 pm

Can anyone recommend someone to install shade sails, including the metal posts? I have the shades and hardware already, but need the posts and help with installation. Thanks in advance!

Make sure who ever you get to help you pours a good sized footing. I put mine in myself and used a 2 foot square by 3 foot deep footing and the poles still shifted in the wind. I'm going to re-do them with twice the footing.

I can recommend Phoenix Tent & Awning. http://www.phoenixtent.com/

They've done a few projects for us at work, as well as doing a shade structure and spear-point awnings at one of my friend's homes, and they have all turned out great... and they can help you with everything from design to installation.

You may want to see this thread - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5108&p=24465&hilit=shade#p24465

Can't vouch for their work personally, but the photos he posts look pretty spiffy.

I've got a couple of the 10' triangle size. Mine are anchored to my house @ 2 points and a wooden wall with posts set 3' deep in concrete. I still take 'em down when the news calls for high winds... It only takes a couple minutes and should help me get more years out of 'em. Winds here can get CRAZY!

I used Matt for my sails. Make sure you have a very accurate drawing of what you want and go over their renderings carefully. The product is great (high quality) just watch the shape.

The footing depth is far more important than the width; You can often get away with a simple 16-18" diameter hole, as long as you go 2-3' deep, and set your poles directly in the concrete.

P.S: I worked for this guy in a previous life:

probably the best tensile structure guy you'll ever meet. If anyone here ever wants to do something REALLY interesting with fabrics, he's the guy.

Mine are 2 foot across and three feet deep, but I have three very large sails. I'm going to pour larger footings and dowel into my pool deck.
