Architectural Salvage Yard

Postby chucuscad on Sat Mar 20, 2010 4:21 pm

I was interested in knowing if there were any architectural salvage yards in Phoenix. I have shopped on the east and west coasts and there are several in every major city but I can not find any here. I am looking for things like old tubs, toilets, pedistool sinks, architectural brackets, mantles, and etc. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Chucu

The only one I know of is the habitat for humanity Restore (there are a couple locations in the valley, but I go to the one on central south of I-17). They have all of the items you listed and more. I'm looking for a green deco style toilet to match the other original fixtures in our bathroom, but haven't found it there yet.

If anyone knows of any other places, I would appreciate it as well.

Use the search feature above and use the word: salvage

While I appreciate the attempt at advice it is not particularly helpful. I already did that and there appears to be no reference to anything but Davis anywhere on these forums and Davis does not carry what I seek. If I have missed a salvage yard please post a link to that article.

Thanks,

You might also try Cucumbers on 7th Avenue.

Lizabel's Treasures on 16th Street between Thomas and Osborne will have some architectural pieces from time to time but nothing major. Most of the stuff would be considered decorative like trim, wrought iron pieces, light fixtures and old doors and windows.

I hope that helps and welcome to the boards - sometimes they are actually helpful and not just critical.

I don't know what it is, but somehow I don't like the tone of this thread. I was gonna take the time to hunt down the salvage yards in Phoenix for you - even though I no longer live there - but I changed my mind.

All the ones I personally know about have been posted already. I've been to salvage yards in NYC and I know the type of place you're looking for but we just don't really have them. I do believe I have seen one with sinks and tubs while flying out of Sky Harbor, am I crazy?

You have to admit, Modernlover, that was a "let me google that for you" type of response. Try searching for the term before suggesting a newcomer search for it themselves, k? K ;-) Because that turns up virtually bupkis.

I've been monitor of this board for years and there is very little documented talk of salvage beyond Davis and Habitat. I pretty much could have answered that question without search, and blindfolded at that.

If the tone has turned sour, help turn it sweet? Because if anyone knows of secret salvage yards its going to be you, and I'm kinda curious if there are some, why Matthew and I didn't know about them from you earlier?

Additionally, from anyone: Why doesn't Phoenix value salvage? Why is this not easily google-able information? We have a person in need and its not just them. For every one that speaks up there are dozens behind them. Color me curiouser.

Damn Modernluv! This isn't the first thread I've seen you get offended in, I think I've offended you myself before... Anywho I don't live in phx so I don't know of any yards there. In Tucson we have Gerson's and Barnett & Shore. I've never been to B&S but it is recomended by Scott Calhoun in his books "Yard Full of Sun" & "Cool Plants For Hot Yards" (I highly recomend these books if you want to start growing your AZ green thumb!). I've been to Gerson's many times and had good luck on all sorts of stuff but you have to bargain with them and know what stuff is worth or they will sorta overcharge you.

There is another salvage yard and I have been there twice, once with Justin. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me and I cannot find it using search but I am sure I heard about it here. I believe you go south on 35th avenue from the fairgrounds and you go under the freeway and it's on your right. I took photos of piles of fences and lockers there. The company does demolition and this is where the good stuff goes. Ali, it's the company that did the demolition of the apartment complex where Brophy has the new sports complex. Every time this thread pops up I go search somewhere else for the name and I keep coming up blank. It *has* been discussed here.

demolition was the term i had not searched for until now. Dickens Quality Demolition

http://www.dickensquality.com/index.php

I don't see their salvage yard listed here. Call them up and inquire and let us know what you find.

I will check out that demolition company.

In my search for a matching green vintage toilet last night, I happened upon this: http://www.vintagetub.com/asp/resources.asp#four

Scroll down to #5 and there are a bunch of architectural salvage companies (i believe salvageone had a lot of MCM stuff) and some of them will ship.
