5800 E. Glen Drive, Paradise Valley

I came upon this derelict residence on a recent hike on Mummy Mountain in Paradise Valley. Though the hearing notice in front suggests it will soon be demolished, it is one of the neighborhood's few homes remaining in its original un-renovated state. Badly neglected and perched alone on a mountainside surrounded by McMansions, it still retains the all elements of its original charm.

Can anyone tell me about it? It appears to have been purchased in February of 2008 for a million five. It's just under two thousand square feet. (And if you are the owner, please forgive my intrusion. All I did was make a few pictures.)

Too bad it might be knocked over, it looks like its got great bones and a unique style, unlike a lot of the tasteless garbage that fills PV.

wow, nice place. is that curving staircase outdoors? leading to a carport? that seems like a really cool space.

It’s a great place, you have a keen eye! We had a potential Buyer for that home when it was first offered for sale. Our person missed it: It sold very fast to an owner/builder who has no interest in saving the home. We go to spend quite a bit of time in it - a great place, it will be sad to see it go. It was in a fairly neglected state but it was only on it’s second owner - very original inside - lot’s of great details and history including images of the original marketing brochure!

It’s so hard to save these houses. I grew up just north or Mummy Mtn. near Palo Soleri. The north slope was dotted with many great modernist houses. So many have been lost. I’m interested in finding out the Architect on this one... We think there is a little Cal Straub to this one, but it’s just a theory...

That's what makes this one so unique -- it looks like a snapshot from 35 years ago. From what I could see of the inside, it looks like much of the original decor remains.

I may have to haunt this place until I can find someone who'll grant me access to the interior. It needs to be properly documented before it's gone.

It's not secure, but I was afraid to do anything but take a brief peek inside the door.

Another unique feature is the size! I spent my teens about a block away in a house with more than twice the square footage. At less than two thousand square feet, it would have been the perfect predator's den for a swinging well-heeled bachelor.

The Mankers are the only member of that neighborhood that I knew. My family used to attend Dr. Manker's church.

The Manker's home looks wonderful from the pictures. It is great that they want to sell it to someone who will respect the architecture. Ray Manker (who is still emeritus pastor at the UU Church on Lincoln) played a significant role in the history of civil right movement in Phoenix and in the country.
