Two mid-century landmarks slated for...historic designation!

Postby azpreservation on Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:11 am

This just in from Barbara Stocklin in Phoenix...

The City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Commission is slated to initiate historic designation for the 1957 Courtesy Chevrolet Sign at 1233 E. Camelback Road and for the 1955 auto dealership (formerly Paper Heart Art gallery) at 750 NW Grand Avenue. Good News! I've often thought that a "coffee table" book of old Phoenix signage could be possible because, I see so many that should be preserved as well as photographed. Or maybe somebody has done that and I've yet to see it? If no such book exists maybe some "grant money" could help fund one.... :D

We've discussed taking pics of the signs along VanBuren, and that insane section in Mesa (the part with the diving neon sign), and then using them to decorate with. Coming from New England where that sort of neon awesomeness is unheard of, it still wows us every time we see it!! That Chevrolet sign is super sweet...-Ginger
