Canal North at 12th Street south of Highland
The first known Ralph Haver Neighborhood
When reknowned architect Ralph Haver returned from service in 1945 Phoenix was his chosen destination, where his brother and father had already thrown down roots as builders and masons. Haver first designed and built a home for his family in Uptown Phoenix, then developed the surrounding plots of land in the Hixon Homes subdivision of what would be later called the Canal North Neighborhood. This created the first known Haverhood built in Phoenix, Arizona.
The first four photos are the original red brick Havers built in 1945-46. The rest of the homes are of unknown origin, including the mystery house across the street from ours (no photo). It wouldn't surprise Ralph's son Bucky if there were many more undiscovered Havers to be found nearby -- the surrounding Uptown area seems to be dotted with them. The architectural style of the Canal North neighborhood is clearly transistional from the prewar to the postwar period. The material of choice is primarily brick with lots of white wooden details. |

A gorgeous Art Moderne home next to the Havers.

The neighborhood is scattered with classic ranches and maintains a rustic, western feel.

A Haver-esque granny flat?

I must apologize for the quality of these shots, I didn't know I had a huge smudge on my lens! Better shots later...
